How hard is it to build a carbon fiber kayak?

I want to build a super light tandem kayak. My choice of materials is carbon fiber. I figured getting a boat plan is easy enough, but didn’t want to get in over my head trying to use carbon fiber. I currently paddle a carbon/kevlar single.

What is the formula to find how many kayaks and Canoe can be made in 8 months?

Norman takes one month to build a kayak (K), and two months to build a canoe (C).

While planning ahead for 1 month, he notes that there is only one thing to do that will not result in any partially finished boats. That is, build one kayak. For planning 2 months ahead, there are two possibilities, KK or C. For a 3 month plan there are three possibilities, KKK or KC or CK.

a) Find the number of possibilities for a 4 month plan, a 5 month plan and a 6 month plan by listing the possibilities. Look for a pattern.

b) Find the number of possibilities for a 7 month plan and an 8 month plan without making a list.

Whitewater Kayak Ideas?

So I’ve decided to really get into whitewater this year. I have an older 11′ Whitewater boat which simply isn’t suited for anything Class III and up. A coworker of mine is an ACA certified Whitewater Kayaking instructor, and plans to re-introduce me to the sport. My question is…which boat should I get?

I know that’s a broad question, and I have a few guidelines.

1) It must be under 8′ 5″ or so to fit in my dorm room upright.

2) I’m working with a college student’s budget, I’m hoping to buy used at under $400

3) I’m going to be mostly in rivers & creeks, up to Class IV. It would be nice if this boat could also be used to surf when I go back to the seacoast, but I have another boat for that, so it isn’t essential.

4) I’m 5′ 10″ average build, 170lbs

So…what kayaks would you guys recommend?

I like doing things outside, kayaking, dirtbike riding, camping, going to the beach, flying (in helicopters), boating/inner tubing, etc. But I don’t mind sitting down for a movie, going bowling, eating dinner at fancy places, playing a game, etc. I get good grades, I am patriotic, and plan on enlisting after college. I am easy to get along with, I’m polite and a gentleman. I like all kinds of music and movies. I will watch a movie like the notebook, even though I would rather watch a good action movie. Pretty easy to find a common interest with me. What do you girls think?

Need help with a movie title…?

A good few years ago, I saw a film but I can’t put a finger on its name…

I would categorise it as a romance film, A woman is on a cruise ship or yacht with her wealthy husband and somehow falls overboard and ends up on an island alone with a chef or staff member on the boat. The woman is extremely desperate to get back to the boat and back to her normal lifestyle rather than stuck on an island with a stranger and no help to be seen.

Whilst the woman is worried, the staff member of the boat has some survival skills and throughout the film the woman and man build a relationship on the island and manage to survive by building a wooden house and eat fish from the sea.

The woman fell inlove with this man and completely forgot about the boat etc, she even had noticed that boats were out looking for her but she enjoyed the company of the man so much she didn’t tell him and wanted to stay there somewhat forever.

The man then sighted a boat long into the movie and signalled it down to go home, the man then realised why he was on so long, because the woman loved him but he didn’t notice.

At the very end it shows the life after the woman and man split up after the island once the woman was reunited with her original husband… The man stranded on the island with the woman throws a ring at the helicopter at the end of the movie whilst she flies away.

I believe the film was on channel 4 a good several years ago, and i was interested in what it might have been called if anyone has any ideas ….. thanks

Rise of The Stronghold Crusader

The sun shun bright through the windows of the Persian castle.
Lord Zircon had just awaken, and was immidietly asked to report downstairs.
He took his time as he walked through the hallways, passing the dust which showed from the sunlight. When he arrived downstairs, he noticed two guards holding one of his own men by the neck. “What’s this..?” He curiously asked. “This man is a Traitor, Sire! He is from the Spartan Empire!” one of the guards shouted. “How dare ye’ interrupt me’ castle, Infidel!?”.
The man said no word, and remained looking down on the ground as he was forced to his knees by the guards. Lord Zircon slowly took his helmet off and noticed the Spartans’ Tattoo on the back of his burned neck. He crouched down and stared him right into the eyes, then whispered “Kill Him”.
The two guards dragged the Spartan away as Lord Zircon walked into another room, where several people were sitting around a large table. As soon as he entered, the quiet talking had immidietly stopped, and all Attention was focused on Zircon. He then walked around the table, and sat at the far end of the table, in silence. “The Spartan Empire had crossed the line for the Last time. I tell you the truth and nothing but the truth when I say, they will burn to the ground!”
His voice echoed in the stone room, followed by a loud noise when he smashed the table with his fist. “We will invade them, tomorrow morning.” He quietly said, the room became silent. “B-But sire..” Jones, his Assisstant began, “We haven’t enough people to even strike the smallest of theirBranch.. You do realize that, don’t you, Sire?” This silenced the room.

Lord Zircon stood up, and everyone else still remained quiet.
“I want every single Man in the Persian Kingdom armored and given a weapon to fight. Make sure their armor will camoflauge them with the sands of the Desert.. On the other hand, I wish every single Woman in the Persian Kingdom to be dressed in bright red, to grab all the attention possible” He finished, leaving everyone confused. “But.. Why, Sire?” His assisstant spoke in fear. “Do not question my orders…..” He paused, “Just do it”. “I will go over the Strategy tonight.. We will bring the Spartan Army to it’s knees, and finally conquer the Sarhara Desert.”
After a second meeting that night, they all went to sleep.
As soon as the large wooden clock stroke Midnight, Jones’ eyes opened widely, as he quietly got up and sneaked out into the Persian City where he entered a small, poor-looking house.
“Tamarai, Wake up!” he whispered as he shook the shoulder of a young beautiful girl, who’se 23rd birthday was today. “You must leave Tonight, the great Lord Zircon has a vicious plan to use the Women of the Persian Empire as a target distraction while the men break through the walls of the Spartan Empire!” He explained, leaving her in confusion, still half asleep.
“Come, we must hurry!”.

And so they walked, and walked until they eventually reached a river which lead into the Ocean.
Jones found a small boat and put Tamarai on it, opening it’s sails to see a large image printed, representing the Persian Empire with 2 swords crossing eachother and a skull above them, burning from the eyes and from the P letter carved into his forehead. “I will see you Again someday, Tamarai. I promise.. No Matter What”. He said confidentely as he smiled. Tamarai, still a bit confused began to tear up. She had remained silent throughout the whole walk to the river, thinking of all the things that Jones could be doing while she is gone, and for whatever reason he could be pushing her away, forever. She never said a word, but kissed him and sat into a boat, putting her hood on, leaving her face in darkness as she stared into the ground on the drifting boat, slowly dissapearing out of sight, for now. Jones returned to the Castle and fell asleep in peace.

That morning, Jones was awaken by the loud war screams of what seemed to be hunreds of men.
He sat calmly on his bed, rubbing his eyes and yawning. The shouting continued from outside, many men were screaming “Down with The Spartans!” as Jones walked up to the window, only to see over 500 men in a specific formation, armored with camoflauged suits, and behind them hundreds of women, dressed in red, and no armor but fake swords.
Zircon walked past the crowd of Men & Women, then looked ahead into what seemed to be an endless desert.. The sun warmed the soft sand with a bright and orange light.. Calm winds spread the sandy beans across the massive fields of hills and mountains made of sand. But straight ahead, for no more than a mile stood the Spartan Empire, small to the eye from such a distance.
Lord Zircon then turned around and looked at his fellow soldiers.
“Tonight! ..” he stop

I threw up. Right over the side rail of the ferry. For like the fourth time. I hate boats; I want nothing to do with them. The cold gray sky helped nothing either. It made the ocean look like cold, gray steel. Why couldn’t there be a bridge to Big Fish Island? And as for that matter, why couldn’t I have just stayed Boston with all of my friends? I turned back to my mom who was sitting on a bench in the middle of the ferry.
“How much longer?” I groaned, grabbing some paper towels given to me by the smart captain.
“About ten more minutes. Come sit. Or, if you want you can go inside again.”
“No, no. Fresh air makes it better,” but went to into the small cabin anyway. I needed more paper towels for the next time I threw up.
The little cabin was sparsely furnished with a few a couple of crosses hanging on the walls, a couple bags of chips and crackers, and of course the paper towels. I grabbed some and wiped the corners of my mouth, eyeing the chips hungrily. I was so hungry after emptying my stomach about four times, but I knew as soon as I ate those Lays they would come right back out again where maybe some disgusting fish would eat them.
The front part of the cabin, the side that faced the front of the boat, also served as the navigation room for the captain. It sounds fancy, but what it really was, was a beaten up looking GPS, a crude sonar system, and a very picturesque wooden steering wheel. A helm, I think it was called. The captain was standing at the wheel, looking out towards the ocean.
He turned and watched me with yellow-ish, drooping eyes. He has a beard that was about seventy-five percent silver, but still with a fair amount of black. His hair was the same, not quite all the way gray, but still showing signs of age. His face had deep lines and creases, but seemed resilient instead of weary. He wore tall black galoshes, dirty jeans, a worn, red flannel shirt and a matching pair of a yellow raincoat and a waterproof yellow hat. He could have been 42, but he also could have been 69. Whatever he was, talkative he wasn’t, for he had hardly said a word the whole wretched journey.

I was assigned a vignette, or short story, based on those included in the book House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros (style wise, not content).

In short, we were supposed to write a highly descriptive narrative with lots of colorful word choice and figurative language (similar to a poem, but in the form of a story.)

I decided to include a lott of metaphors, and although it makes sense to me, I’ve showed it to two friends and one thinks its impossible to understand while the other said they liked it. So I’m not sure on that aspect of my piece, trying to stay very poetic and also make it comprehensible.

Basically, read this like it was a poem &tell me what you think.

The icy metal dances between my fingertips, forefinger and thumb holding back a monster. Its teeth, its silver teeth, hold the power to drop me, past the floor, past the earth, six feet, seven, below it all.

Tap. Tap. Tap. I want it. It wants me. Sideways, it almost disappears. Against my skin, I almost do too.

The first touch is gentle, stroking, caressing. And then the teeth become fangs and the fingers become claws. When did this game become a war? I can stop a raindrop but I can’t hold back a monsoon. As it tears, I begin to split, little bits of me sliding out. I want to tell someone, to say, “You made me wrong. Piñata’s are supposed to be filled with candy, not ache.”

A mouth lies open on my flesh, standing in a field of truth stitched shut by lies. It screams, lips flailing, spitting out teeth just like the ones that formed it. It screams fiery ghosts, little whispers of pain that no one hears. Places, people, was, were, have been. Memories, snaking their way between my bones and finding their way out through my veins. Red phantoms float onto the floor and flood the room, and suddenly I am lighter. Suddenly, I am so small that this ocean could sweep me away, Noah’s ark in the middle of chaos. The walls break down around me, and I release my frail raft onto the water. Somewhere in the waves I see the wooden bats they beat my papier macher ribs with. They thought there was sugar behind my rainbow colored skin, but this sea could prove them wrong.

The churning tide below me surges. Salt water is flung carelessly by the ever-angry waves, buckets of red paint littering the air and slicing across my eyes . Maybe I don’t need to be a boat in these rough waters. Maybe I could just let them swallow me whole.

Can I save money by just having a prepaid phone?

I have 450 minutes a months and I only use like 100 every month. The only time I really talk on my cell is on the weekends and its free anyway. It seems like I should just cancel my plan and just make my phone pre-paid and just buy my minutes as I need them. Anyone else in the same boat?

Should I get another boat battery and On Board Battery Charger?

We recently bought our first boat. Its an outboard 16 ft 1989 Sea-Ray. We are new to boating and have a few questions we need answered before memorial day weekend! We bout the boat in Feb. this year and took it out for a short trip in April on a small lake and it started right up and ran great after never charging the battery. Its now almost June and am wondering if we need to recharge the battery before we take it out again. And I am seriously considering getting an On Board Battery Charger and another battery but money is kind of tight. Ive done some research on them and I know how they work but Im just wondering if its really necessary to get all this right now or if I could just buy a new battery and switch it over if one battery goes dead instead of installing an on board battery charger. We do have a stereo that will be hooked up and a fish finder but that’s about it no trolling motor or anything. Also if any one has any info on transomsupports and if they are worth it that would be great. Like i said we have an outboard and plan on trailering it at least 150 miles each way a couple times a month. Im wondering if it is really needed or if I could wait on that too. Thanks for any help im just a little confused and just want to have a stress-free day out on the lake!!

I plan to take the earliest boat across Lake Geneva (having spend the previous night in Geneva), to Montreux, to visit the Cheateau de Chillion. Could anybody suggest where can I find the timetables and duration of the trip? I will buy a eurailpass so the ferry trip is supposedly free of charged.
If possible, has anybody taken the ferry ride before? Could you describe it please? I imagine this picturesque scene in my mind over and over again. Could we catch sight of the Alps on the lake?

I have a friend whos entire family is big on badass dogs. Thing is, they seldom feed them and not a damned one of them is fixed, male or female. The females they don’t breed intentionally, and they’re mutts to begin with and are pumping out at least a litter of “free to wherever” pups every year. That’s per female, and I don’t know anymore how many they have.

They’ve also got a huge rottie, obviously PB that’s kept outside on a ten foot chain. Never gets off the chain because he’s “too big”. He’s a little over two years old and still doesn’t want to kill, but with those owners he will soon enough. Their pit is in the same boat with a slightly longer chain, only he doesn’t get anything more than food and water because he’s “mean” They’re planning on studding them both, the pit will be making fighting pits.

Is this grounds for being reported? Can it be done annonomously?

HELP! I’ve got 2 free plane tickets and want to plan a vacation, tropical and inexpensive, where would you go?

THIS IS A BIT LONG< READ ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE TIME TO HELP ME DECIDE: THANKS!

First of all I don't want to sound like I am complaining here, just confused on where to go. I realize I am very lucky to have the tickets! The plane tickets are for anywhere in the U.S. plus Cancun, Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Aruba. Most of these places outside the U.S. would be too expensive though in terms of hotel and food for me right now for two people, so where else in the mainland U.S. could I visit that is somewhat near a nice beach, maybe some shells, and isn't too expensive for a hotel there and food?

I only have about an extra 1,000 for a 3 day trip somewhere for the hotel and food and spending. All I want to do is spend some quality time with my husband and sit and watch the waves, drink a tropical drink at a tiki hut, swim in a huge pool and possibly take a boat out to a little island to find some shells.

(Otherwise I also have free hotel rooms at any Harrah’s hotel in the U.S. so I guess they have Harrah’s in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Phoenix, and other places more inland in the U.S. That would be very cheap then since I would then have free air and hotel, but none of those places is really that tropical!)

I could also choose to fly to New Orleans or Miami and try a 4 day cruise. Upside of that: fairly cheap and could see Key West AND Mexico ! And lots of food all included in the price Downside: I’ve never been on a cruise , sometimes there are hidden costs to consider, tipping, extra excursion, etc. and I wouldn’t get into the pool with tons of people, no privacy, and could seem like I’m stuck on a boat with a bunch of drunks since I heard the 4 days cruises are “party cruises”. Again see I’m totally stuck on what to do and where to go with these tickets!

Anyway if I don’t do the Harrah’s free hotel thing or the cruise then, I was thinking possibly Pensacola, Florida since it is supposed to be cheaper and they still offer the touristy things to do there, but not sure if that might be too boring. Do you have other ideas that could work? I wouldn’t mind using the free tickets to California but then the hotel prices are just too high. And Virginia Beach is supposed to be nice but I’m not sure if it is expensive to visit and I know it won’t be as tropical as Florida or Cancun of course since there will doubtfully be tiki huts and tropical drinks/ not sure though?

Also lots and lots of people say go to Cancun but I worry about a few things: crime to and from the hotels, crime at the hotels, crime going to dinner in the cities and I’d hate to see children begging on the beach on my vacation or stray dogs starving to death running down the beaches. If you’ve gone there, is that what you’ve encountered ever? Some previous yahoo people said that was what it was like, not fun for a vacation then.

Someone recommended a place calledCancun Palace (p.s. my research shows: Le Blanc in Cancun looks amazing if you have more money than me for the trip!), someone else said Myrtle Beach, others Key West? Has anyone been to Key West lately, do you have any quiet beaches or are they all packed with crazy tourists?

If I can’t come up with a trip that my husband would also like, then he said I should just use one of the tickets to fly to my niece’s wedding in Minneapolis and wait for the other ticket for something else ….BORING use of the 2 tickets I say, and then I might never go on the somewhat more “romantic” and “relaxing” trip with my husband. I think I’d rather just pay for the wedding ticket for myself separately.Sooooo

…… if you could go anywhere, where would you fly for a fairly inexpensive vacation with my 2 free tickets? I’m totally stumped on what to do and where to go! Thanks for any input!

What are some cardboard boat designs that will FOR SURE win in a race?

I’m building the wood frame of a boat for school, would it be better for the bottom part to consist of…?

I’m building the wood frame of a small one person boat for school. Would it be better for the bottom part (maybe the deck? I’m not sure of the correct term) to consist of a pattern of lots of little diamonds shape or not as many bigger diamonds shapes? And I don’t mean a painted design, I’m talking about the frame of it. Also would it be better for the outline of the bottom part to be a rectangle shape or diamond shape?

Fibreglassing over foam to build a boat – how to do it right?

I am building a CAD model of a boat which I will be slicing up and have plywood spants cut from it by a laser cutter. I’ll then assemble the plywood spants in 3D and fill the gaps with foam. Then I’ll put fibreglass over everything.
It’s supposed to end up being a mix out of a jetski and a sea kayak, about 6 metres in length, powered by a 2 to 3 HP outboard motor, for commuting on a bay in southern NZ (salt water).
Does anyone know how to prepare the foam for the fibreglass, or do I just lash it on and sand later, using filler till it’s smooth?
Maybe any links known to relevant sites?

I have to make the water cycle in 3D as my science project. I am going to use cotton balls for the clouds, but I can’t think of the rest. I’m confused about the ending of shark night 3D?

Hey so i just watched Shark Night 3D, and at the end remember how the shark jumped out of the water at the camera? Did the shark jump out and kill Sarah and Nick who were sitting on the boat, or did the shark just jump out to scare the audience??

i just got my tribe and built a shipyard so now how do i build a boat i have tons of wood and rock i tryed dragging someone on to the shipyard but no boat so is there some requirement i have to meet?
